Internet outages and long plane rides shouldn’t prevent you from working in Drive.
Set up offline access so that the next time you don’t have internet access, you can view your documents, shuffle folders around, and edit files stored in Drive.
If you aren't connected to the Internet, you can still view and edit files, including:
Google Docs
Google Sheets
Google Slides
For non google files, You need to make them available for offline access individually.
Follow the instructions below to make your files available for offline access.
How to make Google Drive offline
Step 1 - Before you turn on offline access
You must be connected to the internet.
You must use the Google Chrome browser.
Don't use private browsing.
Make sure you have enough available space on your device to save your files.
Step 2 - Open Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides offline
Open Chrome. Make sure you're signed in to Chrome.
Check the box next to "Sync Google Docs, Sheets, Slides & Drawings files to this computer so that you can edit offline."
Step 3 - Make file available for offline use
On your computer, go to your Google drive
Right click the files (Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides) you want to save offline.
Turn on "Available offline."
To save multiple files offline, press Shift or Command (Mac)/Ctrl (Windows) while you click other files.
Step 4 - Preview offline files
On your computer, go to your Google drive
Make sure you turn on offline access first.
At the top right, click Ready for offline .
Click Offline preview and your drive is ready for offline use.
How to work on Google files offline
Make specific files available offline
If you have enough storage, some of your most recent files will be automatically saved offline. To manually select files to save offline:
Follow the steps above to turn on offline access in Google Drive.
On the file you want to use offline, click More .
Click Available offline. A check mark will appear in the bottom left corner to show that the file is available offline.
Tip: You can also make a file available offline by opening a Google document, spreadsheet, or presentation, and clicking File menu - Make available offline.
How to turn ON offline access
On your computer, open the Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides home screen.
At the top left, click Main menu Settings.
Turn on Offline.
Note: If you turn on offline access for Docs, Sheets, Slides, or Drive, then the rest will also be available offline.
Open Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides in your Chrome browser to work offline.
How to turn OFF offline access
Open Google Docs or Google Drive.
Click Menu Settings.
On the right, turn off Offline.
